No, you do not need to attend the tuition sessions with your child. However, if you feel being there would support their learning – especially in the early sessions – you are very welcome to join. Some children find it reassuring to have a parent or carer nearby while they settle in, particularly if they are feeling anxious about learning.
The setting of the tuition is different for each learner & their needs. Tuition can be held within the family home, community space, school, or online.
If your child is unable to attend a tuition session for any reason, please contact us as early as possible – ideally before the session is due to start. For planned absences, such as medical appointments, please let us know in advance so we can check our tutor’s availability and try to reschedule the session, however as our tutors often work with multiple learners throughout the day, this is not always possible.
Session frequency varies depending on each learner’s individual needs. We offer up to 15 hours of tuition per week. A typical timetable might include 3 hours per day, Monday to Friday, but this is flexible and planned around what works best for the learner.
We adapt our teaching to suit your child’s needs and the way they learn best. This might include using practical, hands-on activities to help them understand new ideas, before moving on to more formal work. We take our time to make sure your child fully understands something before moving on. Our goal is to build confidence and help learning make sense in a way that works for them. To help keep your child focused and motivated, sessions usually include a variety of activities rather than staying on one task for too long.
Learners can work towards nationally recognised qualifications such as Functional Skills and GCSEs, depending on the goals set for their provision. Whilst we are not an exam centre, we are able to facilitate these exams for our learners through approved partners.
AP Education works directly with schools and local authorities. If you believe Alternative Provision could be the right support for your child, we recommend speaking with their school first. A meeting with the headteacher or SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) can help you explore your child’s needs and the options available.
From there, the next steps can begin to create a personalised learning plan and support structure that’s tailored to your child.
If your child is not currently enrolled in a school, please contact your local authority to discuss a referral to AP Education.
We stay in regular contact with parents and carers to keep you informed and involved in your child’s progress. Our Education Delivery Coordinators (EDCos) will agree a preferred way of staying in touch with you. Some may use a WhatsApp group with you and your child’s tutor to share updates and manage day-to-day matters.
We also hold review meetings with all key people involved in your child’s education every six weeks (or half-termly) to reflect on progress and agree next steps.
If you have any questions or concerns between meetings, your EDCo is happy to help.
It is the responsibility of parents or carers to make sure their child arrives safely and on time to the location of the provision. If transport is a barrier, we recommend contacting your local authority to discuss what support may be available.
We offer core subjects: English, maths and science, right through to GCSE level. In the Early Years, we use a play-based approach that helps children explore, engage, and enjoy learning in a way that feels natural and fun. Throughout the primary years, we provide a well-rounded, enriched curriculum that introduces new experiences and builds the tools they need to be successful.
For older learners working towards formal qualifications, we follow the relevant exam board specifications to support progress towards Functional Skills or GCSEs. While English, Maths and science remain the main focus, in some circumstances we can also support learning in other subjects – especially where there is a specific interest.
Most importantly, we aim to help every learner develop a love of learning and a sense of enjoyment in their education.
At AP Education, Safeguarding is at the heart of everything we do. Every child – regardless of age, background, or need – has the right to feel safe and supported in their education.
All our staff are fully vetted and trained to the highest standards. This includes enhanced DBS checks, training in safeguarding to a minimum of Level 2, and PREVENT training. You can be confident your child is in safe, professional hands throughout their time with us.
Our sessions are usually one-to-one, meaning the tutor works directly with your child. This allows us to fully tailor the learning to their individual needs, interests, and learning style.
In some cases, a second adult may be present to provide additional support, depending on what’s best for your child.
EDCos and tutors have regular check-ins with parents and carers, and all key adults are invited to a review meeting every six weeks to discuss progress and next steps.
We prioritise the safety and wellbeing of both the learner and the tutor. Before any placement begins, we carry out a detailed risk assessment that covers both the teaching venue and the individual needs of the child.
We check for key safety features such as quiet spaces to work, suitable furniture, fire safety measures, and access to first aid. We also carefully consider each child’s communication needs, potential health or dietary considerations, and any factors that might impact how they engage with learning or the environment.
Our aim is to create a safe, supportive space where your child can thrive. If any additional risks are identified, we take appropriate action and work with families and staff to manage these safely.
We do not accept direct referrals from parents or carers. A referral must come from your child’s school or local authority. However, once we receive a referral, we will contact you directly to begin the planning process and ensure your child’s needs are fully understood and supported.
