Alternative Provision (AP) is education arranged by local authorities or schools for learners of compulsory school age who, due to exclusion, specific educational needs, or other circumstances, are unable to access suitable education in a mainstream setting.
The location and format of Alternative Provision are tailored to each learner’s unique needs and abilities, ensuring they are supported in an environment where they feel safe, comfortable, and ready to learn. This may include sessions delivered at home, in school, in community spaces, or online, on a 1:1 basis, in 2:1 settings, or as part of small group.
At AP Education, we work with a diverse range of learners who require support beyond the mainstream classroom. Our provision is tailored to meet each individual’s needs, enabling them to re-engage with learning and reach their full potential.
Learners we commonly support include:
Learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) may require additional support due to learning difficulties, physical disabilities, or mental health challenges. We provide tailored provision aligned with their needs and their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), if they have one, supporting both academic progress and well-being.
Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs can affect a child’s ability to regulate emotions, engage in social interactions, and participate in learning. Our supportive approach helps build resilience and encourages positive engagement with education.
Emotional-Based School Avoidance (EBSA) refers to school non-attendance due to emotional distress, such as anxiety or trauma. We offer nurturing, flexible provision – at home, online, or in the community, to rebuild trust in education and support learners to re-engage at their own pace.
Some learners are not in full-time education due to personal, health, or family circumstances. Our alternative provision offers a structured and supportive route back into learning, helping them to overcome barriers and rebuild confidence.
Learners at risk of exclusion often experience behavioural or emotional challenges. We provide early intervention, personalised strategies, and consistent support to help prevent permanent exclusion and promote positive behaviour and educational engagement.
Education Other Than At School (EOTAS) is designed for learners who are unable to attend a mainstream setting. We deliver flexible, individualised learning packages in alternative environments to ensure continuity of education and progress.
We pride ourselves on being inclusive and adaptable. Many of our learners have multiple or overlapping needs. Through close collaboration with families and agencies, and by working to EHCP outcomes, we ensure every learner receives a bespoke, high-quality learning experience.
